True to the West African griot spirit, Sousou & Maher weave together tradition and renewal. Their music pulses with the kora’s resonance, soulful vocals, and a rhythmic dance of influences from mbalax, reggae, folk and jazz. Their artistrybridges cultures and languages, with songs that call us back to the spirit of togetherness.
Sousou, a Sweden-born singer and multi-instrumentalist, embarked on a journey through West Africa, learning the kora from masters in Gambia, Mali, and Senegal — where her path eventually crossed with Maher’s.
Maher is a Senegalese griot, kora player, and percussionist by birth. He carries the timeless voice of the modern-day griot beyond borders, honoring his heritage while inviting the broader world to listen, reflect, and connect.
Sousou and Maher both grew up in families of musicians and it was the interest and love for the West African kora (a harp lute) that brought them together. An important guideline for the troubadour culture which the kora is part of is the preservation of the musical heritage through its musicians’ continuously finding new ways. In the interpretation of Sousou & Maher Cissoko, it means magnificent kora playing and soulful singing combined with a rhythmic energy and global musical influences.
