About The Georgia Strait Alliance
The Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) was founded in 1990 by a group of passionate citizens united by a concern for the Salish Sea, the wildlife it sustains, and the coastal communities we call home. The guiding vision is a Salish Sea teeming with life, where thriving communities live in
balance with the environment.
Rooted in environmental justice and community action, the GSA continues to uphold that legacy by mobilizing and supporting collective action to protect the Salish Sea region. It does this through advocacy, outreach and education, legal action, policy change, and—most importantly—being active on the ground in communities to mobilize around our most pressing environmental and community needs. It is especially acitve in educating the public about clean boating practices and whale protection.
The GSA were successful participants in the recent Federal Court of Appeal case which confirmed the right of the Department of Fisheries to remove industrial fish farms in the ecologically sensitive Discovery Islands.
But much governmental support for organizations like the GSA has been recently slashed and it is needing increased private donor support to continue its work. To find out more go to https://georgiastrait.org/.
